I guess it depends how good you want it to look i the browser. If you want really good results you need to use one of the open source DHTML or Flash based slied shows. You can also use QuickTime and send it XML - not just SMIL. But as far as i know these are not designed out of the box to send back where in the slide show the user is. For that you would need to hack the Flash or javascript.
