My mistake. I was converting from mp3 to wav in order to make sound clips.

To go the other way, converting batch to mp3, I use Audacity. It takes slightly more mouse movements (importing the files into a project) but then you can use the "Export Multiple" function from the file menu. Select "mp3" as the format, use the track labels as names and choose an output folder, then Bob's your uncle, you're done.
