I know on the Mac that you have to had administrator's permissions to install new programs on the hard drive. Is there anything similar to
that on Windows XP?

Technically yes. Though it's not encountered as often because Windows allows the user (changed now in Vista) to install as the admin and then do everything at admin level without question. However in environments where the admin is not running you'll meet this issue. The inconsistency causes confusion.

The reason I asked is that I having trouble replacing a previous version of my program with a newer version using an installer. Also, when I tried to delete the old version of the Program Files directory.

Could also be caused by having the app running still but visible only in Task Manager.
