Absolutely, but this thread originally came about by you mentioning that you
have a 250GB HD in a Mac that only recognizes 120GB, seems to be a waste if
you don't use it. As stated, one of the things I do on such a partition is
to keep a pristine copy of the OS, it makes regular HD maintenance that
normally requires starting off a CD a breeze and, as I don't take my backup
HD on the road with me, has saved my bacon more than a dozen times
(admitedly far more with Classic than OSX). On a separate HD (and
CDs/DVDs) I keep backups/archives of the 'in use' OS and working files.

As Richard says, each approach has it's advantages; I use partitions for
theirs and separate HDs for theirs.
