It works for me Richard (Rev 2.8.1 Build 472, Mac OS X 10.4.10). I see
the cross-hair cursor and when I drag, a gray translucent rectangle

Freaky: same Rev version, same OS, but I don't get the selection rectangle.
I'm on a MacBook Pro, FWIW.
What syntax are you using? I used:
export snapshot to tMyVar as jpeg
Anyone else not seeing the selection indicator?
