Hi,
I used to build circuitry for the backlights on portable computer screens,
and this was a common joke among the hardware engineers. Although a funny
hoax, computer screens don't work like that. A black screen requires the
same amount of energy to display as a solid white screen. One exception
would be some of the passive matrix screens that used to be on the PowerBook
Duo, among other computers. But ever since the Active Matrix screen debuted,
even laptop screens rely on the same constant full power display that
desktop systems use.

It's easy to prove, just turn off the other electrical things in your house,
leave your computer on, and go check your meter outside.
