Hi, Bridger

user specific configuration files on Linux systems are stored in the user's home directory in a file that starts with '.' character (a "dot file"). If an application needs to create more than one dot file then they should be placed in a subdirectory with a name starting with a ’.’ character, (a "dot directory"). In this case the configuration files
should not start with the ’.’ character.

Applications must never create or require special files or subdirectories in the root directory. Other locations in
the FHS hierarchy provide more than enough flexibility for any package.

Check http://www.pathname.com/fhs/ for more answers.

Best!
Viktoras

Where is the standard place for preference files to be stored on a Linux
machine? Also, where is the right place to store externals when installing?

 Thank You,
