[without using an email client......] I've never done this, but when it looked like I was going to need to, I planned to use the mail command from the shell in Linux. Presumably OSX has this also?
http://www.shelldorado.com/articles/mailattachments.html is a fairly complete account of how to do it. Seems fairly simple, you just drop into the shell and pass the command. There are also quite a few shell scripts posted if you google for them. But maybe there is a reason why this is not an intelligent solution?
