Check boxes

What is the built-in property(?) which is set by a check box being checked
or unchecked? I don't find any information about this anywhere. The browse
tool will check/uncheck it, but I need to script some commands based on its
status, not a simple mouseUp. Or, is this a situation which requires a
custom property?
