The result is set to "can't open file" if you try to change a file that's
already open in another application. This is "the way it should be"; you
can't modify a file in two apps at once, because the other application has
no way of knowing that the file has been changed out from under it.
(Another way of putting this is that files are locked when an application
opens them, and while they're locked they can't be written to by any other
app.)
