Object Name/ID

Hi,
It is noted that the examples in RR use a name reference for an 
object and not an id number.
For example: put fld "MyField" into myVar works ok in a script but 
put fld id xxxx into myvar doesn't work.

Can an object/control use an id number (as used above) rather than a 
name? If so, what would the syntax be?
