Title: Re: sweeten the pill

Rodney,

The problem with what you're suggesting is that if someone purchases a standard license for $349, and then immediately is able to purchase a year's worth of updates at $299, this means that the only difference between what they ultimately get for $650 and the $995 Pro price is email tech support and printed docs. I don't think this is worth $300 (nothing against RunRev's tech support or the quality of printed docs, of course :-).

I think it may be an issue of perception... a software vendor may carry two different versions of a program (one "Lite" and one "Pro", for example) as *two separate products*; each with its own life cycle, upgrade options, etc. The intention in a situation like that is to maintain a gap of functionality/ROI between the Lite version and the Pro version such that people can "switch over" to the Pro version of the product, or can stay comfortable using the "Lite" version, knowing that either one will continue being upgraded.

With Rev, I believe the perception is *supposed* to be this: the main product is Rev Pro, which will continue being updated ad infinitum. The "Standard" version is *only intended as a stepping stone to Pro*, not as a product with its own life cycle. With this perception, it is more reasonable to see that there are no updates as part of the "Standard" product.

Just my $0.02.
