I'm using CouchDB 1.1.0 on Ubuntu 11.04 compiled with https://github.com/iriscouch/build-couchdb. The only problem I have found is https://github.com/iriscouch/build-couchdb/issues/4 On a clean Ubuntu 10.04 LTS installation (do prefer the server edition) it should work without problems.
