Hmm. Sounds like a problem with your JAVA_HOME setting. You shouldn't need to
update your PATH...
You don't mention geronimo version, ubuntu level, or openjdk level.
Geronimo 2.1.4 and 2.2 start fine for me with the following:
JAVA_HOME=/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-openjdk/ ./start-server
