Do you have the <extensions> element in one of your elements regarding the
car-maven-plugin?

<groupId>org.apache.geronimo.buildsupport</groupId>
<artifactId>car-maven-plugin</artifactId>

<extensions>true</extensions>
</plugin>
is in the root pluginManagement geronimo pom.
