Thanks for the help.  

You are on the right track for the VARCHAR -> CHAR.  It was my mistake, the
datatype in the dev database is CHAR.  I've corrected that now, thanks
again.

I haven't experienced this on Access or SQL Server 2000. What database
are you using? What version of IBatisNet are you using? Could you
supply us with a small snippet of the xml mapping that returns a
padding value? It sounds like something is getting changed into a CHAR
as opposed to a VARCHAR.
