Yup, that's something we ran into as our maps became more complex. We first put some effort in to organize them alphabetically, to clear up the structure. Then it took us a couple of hours sorting out why everything broke, only to put them back in the original order (which, accidentally, was the only correct one ;-) ).

My experience is that it is difficult, if not impossible, to extend result maps from within other files. Either way, make sure to include the base resultmap first, and then the referencing result map.
