Yeah, my current project talks to DB2/AS400 and calls RPG as stored procs. It's been pretty much smooth sailing (well, smooth sailing in a rowboat when you have to deal with names like LQAPMST00...).

The last Java shop to touch it did everything through RIOs, which looks like it was a hell of a lot more work. And I think we'll wind up being faster.

Ibatis really rocks at this.... it's been a life-saver.
