I do not really agree
Try RS in conjunction with ProjectMessiah via RealMoca
or Zbrush via obj import
or Rhino (as true Nurbs!!!) via iges plugin
and there are many more...

Maybe others have this problem too, but 3ds-max sure handles much more

I definetly agree, my workaround is use analtics as often as possible.
Analtics are incredible fast to render.
(have in mind: polys not nurbs, and the RS displacement is hard to top by
other apps.
Max displacement results are cruel in my opinion)

Ok, the rendertimes ....

Buy Max with 4 MentalRay Nodes (no then it's better to buy Softimage)
and for the same money buy RS and some fast PC's.
Then compare the rendertimes, don't know which app makes the race?

Don't misunderstood me, I'm working with Lightwave and Cinema4D
and some other 3D apps, too.

I like RS3D behaviour most time.
(it's a little bit like my girl friend, he he.
uuups, forgotten to buy the manual .....)

Other software have a broader userbase which can provide the needed
scripting to make it work. Here we are basically on our own with a difficult
SDK (according to some people here).

And it only support a 360° shutter angle afaik. Other packages may let you
choose to do faster but less accurate "geometric motion blur", which is
sometimes all you really need. Depth of field I would leave to post.
