I also tried modelling an SDS cloud shape, then massively displace it
using coral like bumps. But this basically looks like crap with visible
black egdes and artifacts :(. Anyone know if displacement is incompatible
with volumetric materials (volume properties)?
Oh, and have anyone tried to make selfshadowing volumetric shading? Like
a
cloud casting shadow on itself? Or becoming darker at the bottom because
less light reaches there?

Self-shadowing can make the volumetrics even much slower to render :(
The results can be very rewarding and realistic but you really need a
heavy setup and/or a lot of patience. What you don't need is deadlines.

This was before my landscape experiments, so apologies for the ugly
landscape ;)
These clouds also cast shadows on the ground. But I remember I didn't want
to do this again, my poor CPU... just receiving shadows is usually enough.
