Steel Rope - SDS or Nurbs Curves

Hi!
I'm making KV-1 tank and I need best way to make steelrope on tanks 
sides.  They are the towing
cables that are attached on both sides of the tank. They are same 
looking as the normal hamp rope is
but in steel of course.

I remember that there was a tutorial with nurb curves, but it was made 
with scanline. What I want to make
is to show bump map or with real deformation on ropes.
