There's an Maven archetype for 3.5 (http://wiki.magnolia-cms.com/display/WIKI/Module+QuickStart) but last time I checked (few weeks ago) there wasn't one for 4.x yet. As for the best practices - I'm sure everyone will have their own ;) Some stuff all their paragraphs, etc in the STK module, I prefer to create my own and put all the custom stuff there (with the templates in the filesystem, not in the JCR).
