1) there is most likely a more freemarker-ish approach to do
whatever it is you're trying to do ;) Which tag do you need to use?

The current language is set accordingly for freemarker templates too.
So the build ins work nicely:
${content.mydate?string("yy.MMM.dd")}

for dates.
