As you say, the [1] procedure is the most common, of course in Magnolia CE.
If you are on Linux and you are running a relative "small" Magnolia
instance, you may consider also canonical backup procedures, like MySql
dump and context folder tar.gz.
You can write your own shell script and attach to cron for scheduled
execution, e.g.: at night.
Anyway, the "on demand" procedure is fine :-)
