One possible issue does come to my mind. I import our data nodes as part of
the bootstrapping process (both on author and public). Does that make the data
node links on author result in broken links on public since their UUID values
will be different? I shall try deactivating and then reactivating the entire
tree to see if that makes any difference.

assuming you have done this on both author and public instances, right?

Yes, I did activate the mapping. See

If the configuration is same for the author and public the results
should be the same as well. You might want to compare rendered html
between author and public ... if it is the same (excl. the main/edit
bars related code) then it is definitively the configuration, if it is
not the same, it is again likely the configuration, but posting both at
pastebin.com (or similar) and providing links here would help to track
it down.

The pages look same, except for the missing content when there is a link to one
of our data nodes. I can change the link from author to that for public In the
browser and get the page to display fine (so it is not an issue with missing
data or virtualURIMapping).

I hope that is sufficient information for you to see if you can find what I am
missing.
