For some reason, I only see this question now, sorry.  What you're looking for 
is writing a custom control; there are a couple of "examples" here and there; 
for a complete and 3rd party example, I'd advise you have a look at openmind's 
mgnlcontrols project:

For the specific case of a flickr-selection control.. maybe OpenmindLab's media 
module has this? If not, they might that has an addition. And in any case, if 
you end up writing such a control, let us know !
