Hi Paul, if you find xpath cumbersome and exceedingly complicated, you might want to try this community module http://wiki.magnolia-cms.com/display/WIKI/Hibernate's+Criteria-like+API +for+Magnolia-JCR which basically allows you to write your xpath queries in Java.
