site's domains mapping, and this causes problems when opening a

The site resolving does the following: - try to match the domain
(fails here) - try to match the path (should work in your case):
site/mappings/website

Actually the problem is more subtle: I can open any page in any site
from the Website menu in AdminCentral, but links to other pages are wrong.

Say, the website tree looks like this:

----
sitename/
  news/
    some-article
----

I can click on any of those three and get the right page. Let's open the
homepage, we're taken to this URL:

  http://localhost:8085/magnoliaAuthor/sitename.html

Now, when I want to navigate from the homepage to the news page the
generated URL for that link is:

  http://localhost:8085/magnoliaAuthor/pop/news.html

That page doesn't load (big Freemarker error). The correct URL would be
http://localhost:8085/magnoliaAuthor/sitename/news.html, but since the
domain localhost is not mapped for this website Magnolia seems to fall
back to the default site definition and somehow use the name of the
theme (?!) configured in the default site definition in the generated
URL. Is this a bug?

Any other complexity here: special i18n configuration, ...

I don't know what's special, but this is the i18n configuration for this
site definition:

----
i18n/
  locales/
    nl/
      country: -
      enabled: true
      language: nl
  class: info.magnolia.cms.i18n.DefaultI18nContentSupport
  defaultLocale: nl
  enabled: true
  fallbackLocale: nl
