Thanks for the feedback. The license part is fine.
My question has more to do with the practicality of the Community
Edition.
For example, Intelli-J IDEA has a Community Edition and Ultimate
Edition (paid). The Community Edition does not have some of the most
basic features, which basically forces you to opt for the paid
edition. I am wondering if there is a similar case with Magnolia CMS.
I cannot tell you how far the feature set of the Magnolia Community
edition goes, but generally speaking this problem
will always occur at some point with this kind of business model. For
example the E-Commerce solution KonaKart has also such a business model
and we quickly realised that if we want to proceed we need to get the
enterprise edition.
Although I understand that one needs to earn some money in order to
build all this stuff and that a lot
of users just want to have everything for free without contributing back
and hence a product development company
is using the community/enterprise business model in order so solve their
financial "problem", nevertheless I still believe
there must be a better way of doing this. And I believe we have found
such a business model (keep reading ... ;-)
What we are currently doing is adopting kind of the business model of an
"insurance company". This means we only
provide one solution/edition and do not differentiate between community
and enterprise edition, but we tell customers that
if they pay a yearly "insurance fee" to us and provide us with their
custom code, then we can guanrantee backwards compatibility and
upgradeability at all times between their custom version and our core
product. So far this business model
is working very fine (for the customer/user and for us) and we are
confident that we can change the landscape of "open source business
models" quite a bit, but yes it might not work at all times and there
are a lot of tiny issues to be resolved, but we are learning every day ;-)
Cheers
Michael
Thank you.

Subject: Re: [magnolia-user] Community Edition question
It depends upon whether your client (and possibly you as well) is
comfortable with the GPL licence. If they have no issues with it, I
don’t think you will have anything to worry about.

Hi, I am new to Magnolia CMS and have a question. If I write java
web applications for clients, and my clients want a CMS, would the
Community Edition work or would I need to look into a paid
version? Obviously I am looking for free but I am not sure if the
Community Edition would work.
Thanks
