just to clarify:
- the DMS is great for document management but it's not definitively a
DAM neither a "generic storage" for other kind of assets
- the SimpleMedia module is great as a DAM but it's not a specialized
Document Management Module

if you need document management and no media, pick the DMS, if you
need media management pick SimpleMedia.
If you need both, well it depends on the usage... if you need media +
handling pdfs or similar documents for the web probably SimpleMedia
alone is a good choice without an additional dedicated DMS, while if
you are building an intranet heavily based on documentation maybe the
DMS module could be more appropriate.

The good thing with Magnolia and open source is that you can just try
them both and choose the way that more suits your need :)
