The data module has some importer classes. Have a look at ImportHandler and ImportTarget and how they are configured at config:/modules/data/config/importers. We extended these classes to get import handlers that can import data from databases, Excel files and tabbed text files. It's no rocket science, but I guess I could provide these classes as "improvement" patches to the data module, if anyone is interested.
