It looks like that URL explains setting up an development environment when you want to work on the code of Magnolia itself. If you just want to use Magnolia in your setup and add your own modules, there is no need to check out and build the source yourself. Just set up your own build (most people use Maven I guess) to use Magnolia (empty web app for instance) and add the Magnolia and third party modules you like, plus your own modules.
