Can you debug and see if the ContentTypeFilter sets the content type properly ? You might be bumping into an issue such as http://jira.magnolia-cms.com/browse/MAGNOLIA-1512 - I would really encourage you to upgrade, at least to the next stable version. Upgrading to 3.5 or, better, 3.5.8, should be transparent.
