I checked and it was indeed mgnl:contentNode. Mgnl:resource didn't work, it
threw exceptions all over the place:
RepositoryException occured in CachingImageScaler: /..image path not
shown.../thumbnail: mandatory property {http://www.jcp.org/jcr/1.0}data does
not exist
javax.jcr.nodetype.ConstraintViolationException: /..image path not
shown.../thumbnail: mandatory property {http://www.jcp.org/jcr/1.0}data does
not exist
After changing the node type to mgnl:content however it worked, should I be
worried bout any side effects?:)

What is the type of the subnode you create? If it is the mgnl:contentNode then
this is considered by Magnolia as another document which is why it is skipped
during activation. You need to make sure that such subnode is (afaik) of type
mgnl:resource to have it included in activation together with the parent
document.
