Has anyone encountered this issue with the Data Module before? It's a
bit weird having a dummy type just so a child type works.

Your workaround with the dummy type just make me think that when the
dialog is reloaded after validation, something about the type is
missing, leading to the problem.
I have the same problem, I hope to find the time to write a patch...
