I think it matches Magnolia's principles very well. For instance, if you use the data module to manage content, you don't see what you get either. Such content is independent of its output (in fact, all content in Magnolia is; page editing just makes the common use case significantly more enjoyable ;-))
So what exactly is your problem? You already mention that you can easily detect browsers and react in the model or template.
