That is really strange. I would expect to see some other errors in the logs prior to the one complaining about xml size. :( Can you try to locate log from author from corresponding time frame and post it as well? Does it always happen for the same page or is it more-less random? Does it happen only when activating whole subtrees or also when activating single pages? Are you using workflow?
