Former subtemplates are now treated as template variations. If you upgrade to 4.5.3, there is an update task that should convert all subtemplates to variations automatically. See http://jira.magnolia-cms.com/browse/MAGNOLIA-4412 for more details. Not sure if this is already in the documentation.
