In short: I think we need a way to get to the metadata of a content node from the templates. I believe there was a JIRA call about this.
Furthermore: there is the implicit 'def' template variable (http://documentation.magnolia-cms.com/reference/templating.html#Templatingsupportobjects) from which you can get the RenderableDefinition of the _current_ node. But what if you want to get the RenderableDefinition of a different node in your template?
