Hi,

Take a look at the imaging module:
http://documentation.magnolia-cms.com/modules/imaging.html

Basically, you configure the image-variations (thumbnail sizes) in your theme, 
and can then reference them by using the stkfn.getAssetLink() functions from 
freemarker.
