Then yes, that's because the snapshots you get from Gitweb are git exports. Those don't contain the actual Git repository (i.e not .git directory) - and the failure you see above is when the Maven buildnumber plugin tries to figure out what the current revision is… which it can't do, since it's not running from a Git source repo.
