You can write your own implementation of CacheFactory and use Terracotta or other distributed cache instead of ehCache if that is what you need. Alternatively you can switch of cache in Magnolia completely and use Apache proxy in front of Magnolia to do some caching.
Can you maybe try to explain in more details why do you need to separate cache?
