Are you referring to just the layout that needs to be hand-crafted or other differences between generated and hand-crafted UML diagrams? I never felt the need for a UML diagram myself. Having an IDE that provides easy navigation between subclass/superclass and interface/implementation relations plus Javadoc with descriptions and examples makes all the difference for me.
