Is the directory for cache on a network share? Is it possible that this disk/share is becoming unavailable for time being while tomcat with Magnolia is still running? Do you have quota set on the disk? Is the disk getting full? Is process running under full root permission ( I really don't think that it is a good idea) or is it chrooted so essentially with limited write rights?
