Yes, you need the system context. Off the top of my head something like
MgnlContext.doInSystemContext(new VoidOp(){ ... });

Fixed this (although it's more like a hack):
I needed to overwrite the add() method from the RepositoryBackedSecurityManager
class and run the findPrincipalNode() method in the system context.
