Hi Eril, It has to do with the implementation of Magnolia. While Jackrabbit would support multiple author instances via a cluster configuration, it would have to be taken into account in magnolia's admin interface - basically more complicated locking and data refreshing would be needed.
And since magnolia has excellent performance, and a single authoring instance on quite modest hardware will support many concurrently working authors, the need for an author-side cluster isn't really there. To support high-availability, other configuration options as possible.
