If you are in EE, you have also the backup module. It is very usefull to bring 
BACK content from production to test before deploying a new version.

For other purposes I would go with Nils option 3 (XML export). Pay attention to 
large files: don't upload them with the browser (they are not GZipped), but 
load them from filesystem at Magnolia startup.

An additional option is to clone a Magnolia instance / repository.
Clone the DB, remove Jackrabbit indexes and start Magnolia: it will re-create 
the indexes for the new fresh repository.
