About the possibility to have or not a bypass, this depends on your needs.
If you have a bypass, you can not, for instance, provide in your 404 page a 
search result list or a list of most viewed pages (dynamic), to better engage 
the (already frustrated) 404-user .
And if your layout is complicated, you have to maintain also static files in 
your jars. And navigation is not consistent with your website..

In our experience, error pages are managed as Magnolia pages, in website 
repository, with a very simple template and simple patterns to allow the user 
to continue the navigation.

Anyway, both solutions work well..
