The main goal of horizontal scaling is to avoid single points of failures. To be honest I wouldn't feel comfortable with your architecture: DB KO --> 2 tomcats down Filesystem KO --> 2 tomcats down I would go with a full stack replication (2 machines, each of them with DB, JCR, Java, Tomcat..)
