You can download the community edition and start up right with what's given. You also can setup eclipse and maven as given in the tutorials, also watch magnolia academy. You can build templates nicely with blossom module if you want to use some very special template, which can't be achieved by what's given. You have to learn a lot if you are missing parts because here there are used many technologies. If you just want a school website, maybe you should also watch if there could be a little smaller solution than this here, but feel free to try :) It fits my needs, i know that.
